Content Clustering Strategies To Supercharge Organic Growth
Hey there,
Welcome back to another edition of Bootstrapped Growth. 👋
Today, we break down our content strategies that don’t rely on traditional link building. It’s not about creating loads more content - it’s about organizing it better.

Thanks for reading. Let’s jump in!
🚀 The Power of Strategic Content Clustering
1) Create Topic Clusters
The first step is to build concentrated topic clusters. Avoid a scattergun approach of publishing random content by making one comprehensive ‘pillar’ page for each main topic or cluster (e.g. ‘email marketing guide’).
Then, branch out into detailed subtopic articles (e.g. ‘email subject line tips’, ‘email automation’).
Example ➡️ Figma ranks #1 for ‘design systems’ (main ‘pillar’) with estimated 89k monthly visitors due to their brilliant content clustering strategy. This is backed by strong supporting content (e.g. design system components, examples, templates, best practices and so on)
2) Use A Pyramid Structure
Make a strategic content hierarchy with at least 3 levels:
Level 1: Comprehensive pillar content (5,000+ words)
Level 2: Supporting subtopic articles that each target long-tail keywords (2,000-3,000 words)
Level 3: Add specific question-based content (1,000-1,500 words) to address users’ common questions. You can use Also asked.
Example ➡️ Figma weaves unique brand insights and practical examples into its content.
3) Use Internal Links Naturally
Ensure that:
Every subtopic article links to a main pillar page
Subtopic articles link to related subtopics
Use exact-match anchor text for target keywords
Example ➡️ For the Figma example, each article internally links to Figma design file templates for real-life examples (e.g. Uber’s design system). These are resources users can immediately use and help drive product adoption.
⭐️ How To Implement Content Clustering
Audit Your Current Content: List all of your existing articles, identifying main topics and subtopics. Remember to check keyword volumes for clusters and spot any content gaps.
Create Your Cluster Plan: Choose 3-5 main topics to start and plan 8-12 subtopic articles for each. Map out the internal linking structure.
Content Development Process: Write and/or revise pillar content first. Then write subtopic articles, implementing internal linking as you go. Don’t forget to update old content regularly on an ongoing basis.
